- You can tune it by adjusting the length, checking it on the meter until
- you find something < 1.5. Scribe that length into the side of the antenna
- so you can find it again without the meter.
-
- BTW, there is usually no need to cross-post so widely. I've set followups

- Uh, I must live in heaven then. Most of the local stores
- (Omni (grocery store), Osco drug, even K-mart) have at least *some* of
- those titles. I've not seen QST or Elementary Electronics, but Omni

- The catch is, they only have about 5 or 10 copies of them.
- When these sell out, they're out till next month. Perhaps you picked

-
- I'll say!
-
- The latest thing around here, and I hope it is not becoming
- accepted practice nationwide, is to key up and say "Here is" or
- "This is" then quit transmitting to wait a second for
- the <beep>, then continue transmitting your callsign
- to check into a controlled net.
-
- Not only is this a waste of net time, it just sounds stupid.
-
- I can anticipate that someone will rationalize that this
- pause allows one to discern if he is doubling with another
- station trying to check in, a la W3HXF. It don't work!
-
- In fact, it is even worse than simply transmitting your
- callsign and shutting up because callsigns have variable
- length, "this is" takes almost exactly the same time
- to speak regardless of the speaker. So much for that argument.
-
- I just hope that this is a local* phenomenon which has
- been propogated by the newcomers mimicing newcomers,
- as Jeff has pointed out above. The trouble is that this
- disease is spreading over several of the linked repeater
- systems, meaning that the number of newcomers exposed
- to this time waster is multiplied many times.
-
-
- The practice you're referring to has been used on (some) USAF MARS
- nets for awhile now, and in fact is taught as "good operating
- practice".
-
- I'm with you, though. I think it sounds dumb and in my experience
- does NOT reduce the number of doubles during check-ins. You hit
- the nail on the head -- the phrase (proword, for you MARS types)
- "this is" takes virtually the same amount of time regardless of
- who the op is. If two ops key down at the same instant, they
- will "hear" each others' pauses, and keep on going, thinking that
- they aren't doubling with someone else. The few times I've seen
- this work is when either a) one of the ops speaks much slower than
- the other, or b) one of the ops holds the PTT switch a touch longer
- and some background noise is transmitted, thus letting the other
- op hear that there is another station on frequency.
-
- Personally, when I check into a MARS net, I generally wait until
- it seems all the other ops in my state have checked in, then
- check in when NCS says "Any others from state XX?" I generally
- don't have the loudest signal on freq, so that generally works
- the best -- I just mash the PTT, and give the full check-in
- statement, just like the manual says. No pauses here.

- Subject: Misc. Questions on Choosing a Dual-Band HT
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Last time I posted a question about buying an HT, many responses said to
- make sure to ask around here... so here are a few more questions:
-
- What's the difference between the Icom W2A, W21A and W21AT?
-
- What's the difference between the Standard C558A and C178A?
-
- DJ-580T, IC-W21AT, TH-78A, C588A & FT-530 These five HTs were
- reviewed in last month's QST and as they all have various interesting
- features, I'm having a hard time choosing between them. To help
- differentiate them, I would like to know how modifiable they are. Can
- any of these models NOT be modified to pick-up aircraft frequencies?
- (Yes I know that two of them don't need to be modified at all.) Now
- could any of these be modified to receive cellular frequencies without
- getting bad intermod problems? And the last question, which of them can
- be modified to transmit on a commerical frequency? (I know that the FCC
- probably would not approve of this and that if I want scanning I should
- consider a separate scanner, but I do not want to have to carry an HT,
- a commercial radio and a scanner.)
-
- If you have any other comments I would of course appreciate them greatly.
-
-
- Thanks,
-

-
- One method I have seen used is to simply transmit the main site
- receiver audio to the main site via radio, however short the
- distance. This has two advantages:
- A) it matches the audio response to that of the
- other sites, assuming you use similar equipment
- and configuration;
- 2) if you suddenly need to make your repeater split-site
- to eliminate interference, the process is simplified:
- just pick it up and install it at some distance
- from the transmitter. *
-
- The disadvantage is that it adds complexity and cost where you
- might not want it.
-
- >I think you'll be pretty happy with it. The only down side is the additional
- >maintenance of the link equipment and voter.
-
- As I recently commented to another gentelman considering entering
- the repeater business, do not underestimate the amount of
- time that a more complex repeater system can consume.
- The analogy is the big, empty hard disk which soon is consumed
- by new software and data. :)
-
-
- *Note 2: E.g. we had a single-site repeater suddenly beset
- with howling feedback starting every sunrise and stopping every sunset.
- It was WTOP (1500KC) mixing with WLMD (900KC); if you do the math,
- you'll find that the difference of these two stations is = 600KC.
- Ta da! Instant intermodulation products. We split the main receiver
- away from the transmitter and all was right in the world again.

- A week or so ago, I asked the net for advice on a mobile 2m/440 rig that
- had particularly good out-of-band receive characteristics. Thanks for the
- advice from over 20 folks.
-
- I apparently was not clear enough in the original post -- I was looking
- for a unit which could be installed in an auto, not an HT. But the HT
- advice was good, too.
-
- FYI - I have ordered a Kenwood TM 742A. OK -- let's hear how
- horrible/great a decision I made.
-
- I was quite surprised and pleased to hear from a couple of folks about
- Standard products. I hardly ever hear about this brand of radio products.
- Anyone willing/able to discuss?

- This guy is just like herpes. No getting rid of him. And the article sounds

- And why am I responding to him? Well if he's going to post my emails

- Can anyone recommend a place to buy crystals for HF use. I plan on building
- a QRP rig using HC/6U crystals. Any suggestions would be welcome.
